For the attack coach of the best attacking team in the Australian conference, Shaun Berne has flown under the radar this year.

The Rebels coach has got his hands on some talent in Melbourne and while Will Genia and Quade Cooper are getting all the headlines, you do wonder if Michael Cheika is taking a keen interest in Berne’s work.

Against the Sunwolves, the Rebels cleverly identified and exploited a few weaknesses, targeting first the outside break in midfield and then using Cooper’s short kicking game to find space in behind.

There has been a lot of talk about the Rebels’ flat attack but their coaches will know that against the best teams they will need variety and that’s exactly what they showed in Melbourne.

Berne had a well-travelled playing career (his path even crossed with Cheika at Leinster) and he would have picked up bits and pieces along that way that are feeding into his coaching beliefs.

Berne to replace ‘Bernie’ Larkham? He should be in the running.
